The discovery of ultrasound represents a very important step in the history of science. Its predecessors – sonar and radar came to use around the Second World War as maritime technology. Karl Theodor Dussik is credited with first medical use; he was using ultrasound for examination of the brain and published his first book on the subject in 1942. The method started to be used more widely in the fifties, when it was first utilised in obstetrics and gynaecology.

Ultrasound probe transmits sound waves which travel into the body and are reflected back by bones and organs. These reflected waves are then received and images are displayed on the screen of the ultrasound machine. Their interpretation is not easy and needs to be performed by specialised medical personnel as wrong interpretation can lead to wrong diagnostic conclusions. Ultrasound examination, when performed using only the necessary power is safe for the woman and the fetus.
